The newly extended route for Chingay 2018 doubles in length, opening up opportunities for potential performers to showcase their talents.
This year, the route for Chingay Cultural Funtasy 2018, is extended from 720m to 1.5km. The annual national event will start from F1 Pit Building, head out to the area behind the Singapore Flyer before finishing at the Floating platform on the 23rd and 24th of February.
The extension of the new route means that there would be many more organisations, corporate companies, performing arts groups and interest groups involved this year, and some are first time participants, like DockSession Singapore and Canon Singapore. Educational institutions like Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) will be contributing to the parade as well. A new contingent was formed by dancers from MDIS in collaboration with dancers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
Being made up of mostly international students in Singapore, performers from MDIS have been actively participating in Chingay since 2015. They were even recently awarded 'Outstanding Display’ for their performance. “An opportunity arose when we were awarded with 'Outstanding Display’. 'Creative Youths’ was born as a collaboration with NTU students”, said Ms Cindy Wang, the lead choreographer for MDIS in an interview.
With a large number of participants, Chingay is organising a competition called PAssion Funtasy. This is an opportunity for the participants to showcase their passion and creativity in their performance, and there will be awards and prizes to be won. This year, not only do the performers have to rehearse countless number of times to perfect their blocking and movements for their own acts, but they are also involved in the competition. The competition aims to encourage more ground-up efforts and welcome participation from all walks of life, showcasing the different creative communities. “This is my second year participating in Chingay and having this competition will show our creative side in embracing Singapore’s culture. This is our chance to prove that martial arts does not necessarily have to be traditional but it can be fun and modern too.” Said Muhammad Khidir Bin Salim, 19, performer from Aliran Bebas.
The new route extension will allow more show time for both the participants and audience. Be part of this extravaganza and buy tickets for Chingay 2018 or for more information, visit https://www.chingay.org.sg/
